Comments	Mill Basin, Brooklyn From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Mill Basin/ Mill Island is a neighborhood in New York City in the southeastern portion of the borough of Brooklyn lying along Jamaica Bay and bounded to the north by Avenue U, and to the east, south, and west by the Mill Basin / Mill Island Inlet. The area was called Equandito (Broken Lands) by the local Canarsee Native Americans who sold it in 1664 to John Tilton Jr. and Samuel Spicer. During the seventeenth century it became part of Flatlands, and tidal mills were built on it; the land was owned from 1675 by Jan Martense Schenck and between 1818 and 1870 by the wife of General Phillip S. Brooke. The Crooke-Schenck House, which stood at East 63rd Street, was dismantled in the early 1960s and reassembled at the Brooklyn Museum. The area retained its rural character until Robert L. Crooke built a lead-smelting plant in 1890. The Crooke Smelting Company was bought out by the National Lead Company, and Crooke sold the remainder of the land to the firm of McNulty and Fitzgerald, which erected bulkheads and filled in the marshes. Until the early twentieth century, the chief resources were the abundant crabs, oysters, and clams in Jamaica Bay. In 1906 the Flatbush Improvement Company brought marshland and engaged the firm of Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific to dredge creeks and fill in meadows. Eventually the parcel had an area of 332 acres and was fit for industrial development, and within a decade National Lead, Gulf Refining, and other leading firms engaged in heavy industry opened plants there. Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific bought the land in 1909 and built three large drydocks employing a thousand workers; it also began promoting Jamaica Bay as a major harbor but failed to attract a large volume of shipping. A project begun in 1913 and completed in 1923 to extend Flatbush Avenue to the Rockaway Inlet provided an additional 2,700 feet of dock facilities and a strip of land for a road across the marshes. In 1915 a channel was dredged to the main channel of Jamaica Bay, and a bulkhead and wharfage platform were build on the mainland side of Mill Creek. By 1919, Mill Island was the site of at least six manufacturing and commercial concerns. During the late 1920s and 1930s the docks were rented to a number of small industrial firms. The neighborhood remained a grimy industrial area for thirty years, but its further development was hindered when plans for rail service to the rest of Brooklyn went unrealized. Residential development began after World War II, when Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific sold to the firm of Flatbush Park Homes the land bounded to the north by Avenue U, to the east by East 68th Street and East Mill Basin / Mill Island, to the south by Basset Avenue, and to the west by Strickland Avenue and Mill Avenue. Brick bungalows were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of which were later replaced by large, custom-built, detached one-family houses on lots measuring fifty by a hundred feet. Each leaf carries six lanes of traffic - three in each direction. There is a sidewalk on each side of the leaf.[1] Built in the 1940�s, the bridge is the only draw bridge on the Belt Parkway. It cost $1.4 Million to build this bascule bridge. Reconstruction The New York City Department of Transportation has begun reconstruction of the Belt Parkway Bridge over Mill Basin. The bridge was constructed in 1942 and has outlived its useful service life. Due to the effects of age, weather and increased traffic volume, reconstruction was deemed necessary. The reconstruction work will be accomplished in 2 stages. The Department has completed the rehabilitation of the south portion of the Belt Parkway Bridge over Mill Basin. Comments	Five Failing NYC High Schools to Close NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The New York City Department of Education said on Monday that five failing high schools will close. One of those schools is Lafayette High School in Besonhurst, Brooklyn. Lafayette opened in 1939 and has an impressive alumni list including Sandy Koufax, Larry King, Fred Wilpon and Paul Sorvino. DOE officials said the schools that are being closed for poor four-year graduation rates and three of the schools had safety concerns. The other schools that will close include Samuel J. Comments	Hi Lou, I do remember Larry's Bakery, used to go there all the time, great treats. I also remember Nicks Seafood. I loved the winters and snow and the days we would get off from school and we would spend them making forts and having snowball fights. I was too chicken to hitch a ride on trucks or cars but I used to watch my friends. I do remember hitting buses with snowballs, one time the driver stopped the bus and came running after us. I do believe we broke some speed records that day. ;-) There were lots of kids in the neighborhood and there was always something going on. Down here people hardly speak to each other and no one sits outside talking to their neighbors, such a different life.

As kids we always managed to make a few bucks shoveling snow in front of Krasne's [which was turned into Austin's Pharmacy ].It was a great neighborhood . Winter sports were hitching on trucks /or cars [when they had bumpers ] and hitting buses with snowballs ,or sleighing down the big hole , a vacant lot on the corner of L & Ralph . Nino was cool , and another stop on the way to walking to MQH .

Comments	Here are some more memories.. When I was younger I used to go to Nino and Dots and drink vanilla malts or a vanilla egg cream while reading the new comics that came in. Every once in a while Nino would find me an oldie (10cnets) and let me have it. I spent every dime I had on comics. I also went there instead of MQH on Sunday mornings, I used to spend the money for the collections on the same thing. I went to Landis and John's Deli and the bakery for the Sunday Italian pastries. I loved Christmas time in NY, it has never been the same anywhere else. The snow, going to midnight mass (if you could get in) and visiting every one of your friends homes and eating so much. We also got a few drinks from some of the parents that were not paying attention or just feeling happy...lol I remember when they cleared out all the woods behind the bowling alley off of Ralph Avenue. I was around when the first started building the Mall, boy that was kool, it must be crazy now. I've not been there in a long, long time. Well that's it for now, more to come later.

Comments	I signed this list a while back and did have contact with a few friends. Mostly hang out on 57th with Ann, Greg, Debi, Susan, Lucille, Charlie, Billy. Eddie and John used to come around from the other side of Ave N Park in their 69 Charger RT. Sorry if there is anyone I missed. Some I've heard are not with us anymore. Used to hang out with some guys from 52nd street also, Joe, Frankie I used to hang out at L Park, N Park and a few others that my memory has misplaced. I played lots of handball, used to beat the old guys who worked across the street. I used to play pool (and pretty good) at a bar on 48th and N, I just can't remember the name. I used to know everyone there. I went to MQH forEVER it seems, South Shore but mostly cut out. Had a blast and will always remember the crazy and sometimes dangerous things we did. Got married WAYYYYYYYYY to young and went to Germany. Well write if you remember me and are so inclined.

Comments	I'm left wondering how Unscrupulous Lou (UL) and Evil Joe (EJ) didn't get drafted by the US army during the height of the Viet Nam war. They must have been 4F's. I figure UL went to Whitehall dressed as a woman calling himself Louise so they sent him to Woodstock to attend the music festival knowing Louise couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag, 2 and 13 as the story goes. Now EJ, that's a different story. EJ could fight his way out of a paper bag. I heard EJ ate 1,000 plus raw eggs the night before his inductee physical thus raising his cholesterol to the point of impending death. When the army asked EJ why his cholesterol was so high he told them he's a chicken hawk and chicken hawks always eat a lot of eggs so they let him out of the draft. So UL and EJ, this is what I heard. If this is not so then why didn't you guys get drafted and go to the Nam. Looking forward to your reply.

Comments	Hey, come on now folks. What the hell is this turning into?? This was our neighborhood. Some of us, as kids, did things that we are not proud of. Some had better experiences than others. But a lot of us grew up and smartened up, and became good citizens and members of society. I like to think about all the good memories from the neighborhood, the fun we had, etc. Were we perfect? No. We were trying to find our way during one of the greatest eras of change and rebellion this country has ever experienced, the 60's. As for the comments by "not a chance". I was probably one of the "78 Park losers" you refer to, and I take umbrage in your remarks. I grew up, pay taxes, own a business, raised 2 wonderful children and have 2 beautiful grandchildren, and I bet many of the other "losers" have a similar resume. Are you beyond reproach? Never did anyting wrong? If so, then why is it that you, unlike many of the "losers", don't have the guts to post your name? Let's stop overthinking this little site, friends. It is a board for people to reconnect, look for old friends, to think back fondly on the past. And, once again, we should all thank Coby for providing us with this forum.

But a lot of us grew up and smartened up, and became good citizens and members of society. I like to think about all the good memories from the neighborhood, the fun we had, etc. Were we perfect? No. We were trying to find our way during one of the greatest eras of change and rebellion this country has ever experienced, the 60's. As for the comments by "not a chance". I was probably one of the "78 Park losers" you refer to, and I take umbrage in your remarks. I grew up, pay taxes, own a business, raised 2 wonderful children and have 2 beautiful grandchildren, and I bet many of the other "losers" have a similar resume. Are you beyond reproach? Never did anyting wrong? If so, then why is it that you, unlike many of the "losers", don't have the guts to post your name? Let's stop overthinking this little site, friends. Comments	an old friend of mine from the old neighborhood told me of this web site today so I looked through the pages and noticed names , places mentioned and things we used to do that brought back many good memories . I've been out of the neighborhood for 20 years and sometimes I wonder what happened to all the burn outs at L park . Thoses days were amazing , on any given night in the summer , the park would be filled with 50 to 100 teenagers and young people with any kind of drug you could imagine . I thank God every day that I survived those days . Many friends did not . Things I remember most include: Dildo's candy store , L park , riding my bike to Reese park bay 14 in the summer , Breezy point , block parties , skitching in the snow , cutting out of school , and much more . I have some regrets for some really stupid things I did to other people and for that I am truly sorry . Overall , growing up in this area was a great experiance that will stay with me for the rest of my life . Anyone who remembers me , drop me a line .

Comments	Oh yeah that's right ... all the GOOOOD times: The vandalism: P.S. 236, P.S. 203, The two synogogues on Ave. U, 78 Park, Ave N Park, Ave L park, Strickland Park, any construction site, cars, storefronts, etc. The violent, non-violent, drug induced and statutory rapes. The countless asaults. The ripoffs ... burglaries, car thefts, drug related, etc. How many of these crimes were even reported, no less solved by the Keystone cops at the 63rd pct? How many of the murders mentioned were ever solved? I won't even try to catalogue the drug dealing ... the number of deaths attests to that. The hood was lawless ... we just didn't know anything better ... sure it was fun ... only the dead, battered and unlucky paid for it ... Oh yeah and the parents who didn't have a clue; they just spent a good part of their lives dealing with the wreckage.

Comments	Hey Mr. Blast ... I don't know you now and probably didn't know you then. I am referring to the punks that made life in the hood miserable for everyone around them then and continue today. These unrepentant and sometimes "born again" punks continue to assault, defame, debauch, defraud and debase all those around them. Many of them, as evidenced on this site, have migrated from the hood, spreading their addictions and perversions to "fresh" environments like a virulent germ, infecting friends, family and anyone else in the vicinity. I don't know why you would include yourself in this hall of shame, but I sure didn't. Though I do have certain folks in mind ... I'd rather confine their memories to the sewer where they belong. I snuck him down my basement many times when he had nowhere to go . if barney was a bit prone to violence ...it was not his fault . Both he and Ray were big Elvis fans , Ray all the more so . I married David Daniels of Bay Ridge. No kids - yet. The family is all healthy and doing well, thank God. We will be moving down to Florida in a year or two.
